What are the three types of fires an establishment can experience?
Understanding the Different Types of Fires
When it comes to fire safety, it’s important to understand the different types of fires and how to respond to them. Fires can be classified into four categories: Class A, B, C, and D. Each type of fire requires a different approach to extinguish it, so it’s important to know the difference.
Class A Fires
Class A fires involve ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, cloth, and plastics. These fires are best extinguished with water or a foam-based extinguisher. It’s important to remember that water should never be used on a Class B or C fire.
Class B Fires
Class B fires involve flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, grease and other solvents. These fires should be extinguished with a dry chemical or carbon dioxide extinguisher. Never use water on a Class B fire, as it can spread the fire or cause an explosion.
Class C Fires
Class C fires involve electrical equipment such as wiring or appliances with energized circuits. These fires should be extinguished with a non-conductive extinguishing agent such as carbon dioxide or dry chemical. Never use water on a Class C fire, as it can cause an electrical shock.
Class D Fires
Class D fires involve combustible metals like magnesium, titanium and sodium metal powders or flakes. These fires should be extinguished with a dry powder extinguisher. Never use water on a Class D fire, as it can cause an explosion.
It’s important to remember that the type of fire you’re dealing with will determine the type of extinguisher you should use. Knowing the difference between the four classes of fires can help you respond quickly and safely in the event of a fire.
